Monitoring of Prestressed Concrete Bridge

Project Description

Summary: Monitoring system for long term evaluation of prestressed concrete bridges in the Main-Danube Canal in Baiersdorf

Clients: Ingenieure + Berater SCHWESINGER

Place: Baiersdorf (Germany)

Period: 2004  - 2005

Installation: SMARTEC

Structure's short description: Baiersdorf bridge is situated on Main-Danube Canal, near Norimberg, Germany. It consists of two girders and the deck. The bridge is 56 meters long and 9 meters large.

Aim of monitoring: The aim of monitoring is to increase the knowledge concerning the structural behaviour of this bridge, to increase safety and reduce maintenance costs. In the 1990 during the Load-carrying test for the Safety Evaluation some cracks occurred in the middle of the bridge. 6 standard SOFO sensors and 4 thermocouple had been installed in order to periodically monitor the condition of the structure.

Number of sensor: 10

Main Results: All the sensors had been installed on the surface of the girders and they are working properly. After the installation a loading test with a truck had been performed successfully. Periodical reading are performed in long-term in order to discover deviations from the expected structural performance or damage in time.
