Bridges: Cable stayed bridge in VeniceCase study: SOFO, ADAM SystemCable-styed bridge
Project DescriptionSummary: Static and dynamic structural monitoring of a curved cable stayed bridge located in the commercial harbour of Venice. A total of 78 SOFO sensors and 4 SOFO inclinometers were integrated in: main deck (231m length), 18 cables and tilted pylon Clients: Tecniter Srl Place: Porto Marghera - Venezia (Italy) Period: 2003 - 2005 Installation: Tecniter / SMARTEC Structure's short description: A new challenging cable stayed bridge has been monitored since 2003 in the commercial harbour of Marghera, the industrial zone of Venice basin. The structure consists of seven spans, with a total length of 424 meters: the main deck, with two spans of 126 and 105 m, plus 5 other small spans, with lengths from 30 to 42m. The deck frame is made of steel and has a width of 24 meters. Aim of monitoring: To increase the knowledge of the structural behaviour, and mainly to monitor in the best way the construction phases of this bridge (avoid failure in the precast slabs assemblage) the Authority decided to commission a permanent health monitoring system. The fiber optic SOFO monitoring system, developed by SMARTEC SA (Manno, Switzerland), was chosen for this application, and a total of 78 SOFO sensors, 4 SOFO inclinometers and several thermocouples has been integrated on the bridge by Tecniter Srl (Milan, Italy). A permanent static and a dynamic structural monitoring will be performed on the structure, keeping under control the following parts: the main steel deck, the 18 steel cables which support the load of the deck, the tilted pylon antenna, on which the cables are anchored. Number of sensor: 82 Main Results: N/A
