Bridges: Curved concrete bridge in Lugano

Case study: SOFO, ADAM System

Curved Bridge
Longitudinal and shear strain evaluation
Monitoring during construction and long-term

Project Description

Summary: Structural monitoring of a curved concrete bridge on a torrent at the North Lugano motorway entrance. A total of 28 SOFO sensors, 2 SOFO inclinometers and 12 thermocouples were integrated in the main deck (36m length)

Clients: Dipartimento del Territorio

Place: Manno - Lugano (Switzerland)

Period: 2004  - 2005

Installation: SMARTEC

Structure's short description: The structure is a curved concrete bridge poured on-site and it consists of 5 spans, for a total length of 134 meters. The SOFO monitoring system was integrated on the main span (36 meters length) which cross the Vedeggio river

Aim of monitoring: Improve the knowledge and optimise the design of this peculiar little curved bridge

Number of sensor: 42

Main Results: Deformation of the bridge during the construction phases and for the whole life cicle Temperature monitoring and correlation with the strains measured
