Tunnels: Luzzone Chamber

Case study: SOFO System

Tunnel Monitoring
Rock deformation Measurements
Multi-point Extensometers

Project Description

Summary: Tunnel construction by blasting, multi-point sensors, convergence monitoring during successive construction phases

Clients: OFIMA SA

Place: Ticino Canton (Switzerland)

Period: 1997  - N/A

Installation: IMM SA

Structure's short description: The tunnel is used as compensation chamber for the Luzzone hydropower plant. Due the dam raising it was necessary to enlarge this chamber.

Aim of monitoring: The SOFO sensors were installed radialy in order to measure the rock deformations during the different phases of construction.

Number of sensor: 8

Main Results: The recorded deformations were used to optimize the thickness of the shotcrete lining.

Installation of the connection box.
