Dams: Luzzone dam raising

Case study: SOFO, DiTeSt System

Concrete arch dam monitoring
Dam raising
Old-new concrete interaction

Project Description

Summary: Concrete monitoring of the dam raising. Old-new concrete interaction, long-term monitoring

Clients: IBWK-ETHZ

Place: Ticino Canton (Switzerland)

Period: 1997  - N/A

Installation: IBWK-ETHZ

Structure's short description: The Luzzone dam was recently raised by 18 m to increase the capacity of the reservoir.

Aim of monitoring: The new concrete was instrumented with long-gage SOFO sensors to monitor its shrinkage deformations and to evaluate the interaction between the newly added concrete and the old one.

Number of sensor: 9

Main Results: The sensors survived unharmed the installation in the coarse concrete. Then sensors monitored the deformations over years of operation and showed results compatible with the finite-element simulations.
