Bridges: Vaux FBG

Case study: SOFO System

Strain monitoring on steel
Monitoring during bridge push
Multi-axis strain measurements

Project Description

Summary: Box girder monitoring during push phase, concrete deck monitoring using Bragg grating sensors in SOFO packaging

Clients: Vaud Canton

Place: Vaud Canton (Switzerland)

Period: 1997  - N/A

Installation: IMAC - EPFL / Naval Research Laboratory

Structure's short description: The Vaux viaduct is a composite highway bridge. A steel caisson supports a concrete slab. The steel caisson was pushed across the valley, on top of concrete piles as high as 120m.

Aim of monitoring: Fiber Bragg grating sensors were installed to monitor the strain changes of the steel caisson during the Push phases.

Number of sensor: 4

Main Results: Strain changes in horizontal and vertical directions were recorded and agreed well with reading taken with conventional foil strain gauges.
